NYS Justice Center's Ombudsman Program
The NYS Justice Center's Ombudsman Program advocates for the rights and well-being of individuals receiving services at Sunmount and Valley Ridge Developmental Centers. The Ombudsman is a resource that assists individuals and their families with navigating programs and services, and advocating for their rights. Our Ombudsman uses a trauma-informed approach when providing services.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Advocacy:
Advocates on behalf of individuals with disabilities, ensuring their rights and needs are protected.
Complaints and Concerns:
Assists in resolving complaints and concerns and provides information and resources to help individuals and families make informed choices.
Access to Information, Resources, and Services:
Provide consultation and information about an individual's rights and available resources and services to individuals receiving services, families, and agency staff.
Systemic Issues:
Identify and address systemic issues. Inform leadership regarding systemic issues that can’t be resolved by the Ombudsman, individuals receiving services, their families, and staff.
Promote and Foster Self-Advocacy:
Empower individuals receiving services to advocate for themselves, make informed choices, and exercise their rights. Teach Self-Advocacy skills.
Onsite Visits:
Visits both campuses to meet in—person with individuals and staff.
